Our GenAI Special Issue for Computational Communication Research is live!

Alvin Zhou, Ewa Maslowska, and I guest-edited a special issue on ``Generative AI in Computational Communication Research’’ for the journal Computational Communication Research. The special issue aimed to bring together cutting-edge research that either focuses on generative AI as a communication phenomenon, or substantively uses generative AI to study communication processes. We received several stellar submissions and we are happy to report that the special issue is live now on the CCR website!

We also co-authored an editorial with fellow scholars who had convened at the 2024 International Communication Association’s Computational Methods panel on GenAI – the very forum that sparked the idea of this special issue. In this piece, we reflect on the papers we accepted as well as those we were unable to, trying to synthesise the key themes, tensions, and trajectories, and offering a bird’s-eye view of how generative AI is reshaping the field. Our only hope is that these reflections don’t become obselete in the time taken by you to summarise them using a prompt. :-)

Invited Talks in the US

Earlier this month, I delivered two invited talks in the US - one was at the Computational Media and Politics Lab at Northwestern University. The second was part of the Ivan Preston Colloquium at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I was the first invited speaker of the academic year. It was my first time in the midwest since leaving Chicago during the Covid-19 pandemic and I loved being back in the crisp embrace of American fall weather that I so dearly miss in Singapore. Invited Talks in Hong Kong

Last week I had the privilege of delivering two invited talks in Hong Kong - one at the Department of Media and Communication City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), and another at the CUHK School of Journalism and Communication. It was my first visit to the city, and I found both the city vibes (which includes the dim sum, of course) and the conversations with collaborators and new colleagues immensely rewarding. Singapore and Hong Kong are uniquely positioned to contribute to the evolving discourse on computational social science. Yet, in exchanges with faculty and graduate students, I could sense how often Asian perspectives continue to fly under the radar in the broader narrative of the field, despite their potential to significantly enrich and recalibrate its trajectory.
